A Critical Appreciation of “ The Definition of a Gentleman” by John Henry Newsman
The present essay, “A Definition of a Gentleman” is an excerpt from “An idea of a University”, a book containing a series of lectures given in Ireland in 1852 by John Henry Newman. Departing from Protestantism, he convert to Roman Catholicism, attracting the gentry and preaching them moral lessons. He States in that book that the primary purpose of a University is to develop the mind of a students and not only to dispense information. In the present essay, he has attempted to define a gentleman. He says that a gentleman is one who does not inflict pain upon others and does not assert his nature but instead makes others, who are around him, feel comfortable and at ease. Besides, he also helps other by making it easier for them to succeed.
In this essay, he compares a gentleman to an essay chair or a
good fire that helps people to keep them warm and cozy. And easy chair is
always welcoming, always comforting. Similarly, even if a gentleman is not
always before you but still he is there, waiting with open arms to comfort you
and help you to make your life easier and to support you when you need it more.
A gentleman is like fire who helps dispel cold and fatigue. He is also a person
who avoids a jar or a jolt in the minds of others and helps everyone to be able
at is an at home.
Furthermore, in his
essay he says that a gentleman observes four cardinal virtues which are namely,
Prudence, Justice, self-control and
courage. Cardinal is a word that traces its root in the Latin word Cardo
meaning ‘hinges’. These virtues are so called because they are the four primary
moral virtues (the hinges) upon which the door of the moral life swings.
In addition to that, A gentleman always make light of the
good deeds that he does to other and never speaks of himself unless compelled
to do so. He has no room for slander or gossip. He never takes unfair advantages
of the situation, nor he nurse a grudge against the people who wear unjust to
him. He possesses a disciplined intellect- an intellect trained to handle any
situation by applying through to problem-solving and he is an expert decision
maker. In brief, it can be said that a cultivated interest, a delicate test, a
dispassionate mind and a noble and a courtiers bearing in the conduct of life
are some of the essential qualifies of a gentleman which is the result of a
good liberal education of a University.
No and the end, it can be said that John Henry Newman in this
essay, has put his idea in a straight forward way and in simple sentence and in
doing so, he had struck a unique balance between vitality and elegance beside
he has also exhibited his niece sense of suppliers throughout the present
essays.
