Critical Appreciation of Tiger and the Dear by Sir Aurobindo
The poem entitled the “Tiger and the Dear” has been composed by Sir Aurobindo,a great poet, thinker and mystic of Indian English literature. He was primarily a visionary who lived the life of the mind and soul and who presented a part of his vision in his writings.
The present poem, which is short and philosophical deals
with the contrast between evil and good, innocence and experience life and
death. The poem shows the bright and burning terror of the forest. It has a
beautiful internal rhythm contrast of cacophonic and sounds and an artistic
design. It is a poem which deal with life and death through the symbol of dear
and the tiger.
The opening line Show the balance approach of sir Aurobindo
about the tiger. Generally people hate and neglect the tiger because it is very
Savage, rough and dangerous but Sir Aurobindo attitude to the tiger is both
positive and negative. Here tiger stand for death, darkness and dull brain.
The deer of this poem suggests love, peace, innocence and
soul. The Killing of the innocent dear by the tiger suggests the death and
destruction of the healthy values of life by the cruelty of the modern
civilization or the materialistic mind. On social and historical plane, it
suggests the crenation of old ideas and traditions by the fire of modern
science and fashion. On the ethical and mystical plane it suggests the mass
neglect of the voice of soul by the various waves of mind.
In the present poem Sir Aurobindo seems to be very
optimistic about love and peace. He thinks that in spite of various blows of
death and darkness, life is a thing to be enjoyed. He also foretells that the
day is not so far when both the tiger and the dear will drink water from the
same pond.
Here the poet expresses his philosophical ideas of life and
death, innocence and experience through the symbolic story of the tiger and the
dear. This philosophical presentation of death and life innocence and
experience through some beautiful image and phrase shows the poetic talent of
sir Aurobindo. Here we get high intensity of words and rhythm and also
intensity of vision rarely found elsewhere.
