Story of Holi

Story of Holi and why Holi is celebrated

Every festival has its own story, which is based on religious beliefs. There is a story behind Holi also. There was a king named Hiranyakshipu, who considered himself to be the strongest, hence he hated the gods and he did not even like to hear the name of Lord Vishnu of the gods, but his son Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakshipu did not like this at all, he used to scare his son in many ways and stop him from worshiping Lord Vishnu, but Prahlad did not listen to him, he remained absorbed in the devotion of his God. Troubled by all this, one day Hiranyakshipu made a plan.

According to which he asked his sister Holika (Holika was blessed with the boon that she has victory over fire, fire cannot burn her) to sit on the altar of fire with Prahlad. Prahlad sat on the altar with his aunt and became absorbed in the devotion of his God. Then suddenly Holika started burning and there was a voice from the sky, according to which Holika was reminded that if she misuses her boon, then she herself will burn to ashes and this is what happened. Prahlad's fire could not do any harm and Holika burnt to ashes. Similarly, the people celebrated that day with great enthusiasm and till today that day is celebrated by the name of Holika Dahan and the next day they celebrate this day with colors.

How to commemorate Holi:

All around India, people celebrate the holiday of Holi, but in North India, the celebrations are more fervent. People travel to locations like Braj, Vrindavan, and Gokul to witness the Holi festival. These locations have many days of celebrations for this holiday.

People travel to North India to witness the well-known Braj ritual, in which males paint women with colours and women beat them with sticks.

Holi of flowers is also celebrated at many places and along with playing songs, everyone meets each other and celebrates happiness.

Rang Panchami has more importance in Central India and Maharashtra, people form groups and go to each other's houses with colours, gulal and apply colors to each other and say "Don't feel bad, it's Holi". Holi has a different celebration in Indore city of Central India, it is called “Gair” of Rang Panchami, in which the entire city of Indore comes out together and enjoys the festival by dancing and singing. Preparations for such events are done 15 days in advance.

This festival of colors is also called “Phalgun Mahotsav”, in which old songs are sung in the language of Braj. Bhang paan is also a special part of Holi. Intoxicated, everyone hugs each other, forgets all the grudges and sings and dances with each other.

Many dishes are prepared in homes on Holi. In our country, special dishes full of taste are prepared in every festival.

Be careful during Holi:
