Dehradun District

Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand state as well as a district, its headquarter is in Dehradun city only. History of Dehradun

Dehradun is also involved in many types of mythological stories and cultures. Its history dates back to the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Read the story of Mahabharata and Ramayana in Hindi here. The ruins of Raja Rasal of Haripur were found near Kalsi, which tells about its prosperity.

In 1368, Mahmud Ghaznavi of Timor attacked this area. Dehradun is made up of two words Dehra and Doon. In this the word Dehra means camp, when Ram Rai, the son of Sikh Guru Har Rai came to this place, he and his companions camped here. Since then the word Dera was changed to Dehradun. Some historians also say that the word Dehra is a meaningful word in itself, the word Dehra in Hindi means Devagraha or Devalay, similarly the word Doon means Droni in Sanskrit, which means a valley between two mountains. . This is how it got its name Dehradun.

The Sikh Guru established his sect and received support from Aurangzeb, then in 1757 from Rohilla Najibuchhoula and in 1785 from Ghulam Qadir. Till 1801, there was economy in this area. Then in 1816 the British captured this place and after that in 1827-28 they got the cities of Mussoorie and Landour. Dehradun district was merged with Garhwal division in the 1970s. In the year 2000, after the formation of Uttaranchal state as Uttarakhand, it was established as its capital.
