Critical Appreciation of "Our Casuarina tree" by Toru Dutt

The poem entitled "Our Casuarina tree" is a Masterpiece outcome of the pen of dot a great poet of Indo Anglian literature. Beauty and tragedy and fatality criss-crossed in the life of Toru Dutt . Premature death of her elder brother and sister caused a deep strain of melancholy in her nature and this strain is one of the dominant characteristics of her poetry. Toru herself had a premature death at the age of 21.

In that short span of her life, Toru has created some beautiful lyrics. Beside smaller lyrics. She has published of volume of her rendering form French into English with the title " A Sheaf leaned in French". No doubt, Toru Dutt lives and literature as one of those little significant, or high pants we cannot do without whose power of suggestions could be potent and immense.

"Our  Casuarina tree" is a very impressive poem as it throws light on the quality of the poets heart . It is more than a poetic evocation of a tree. It is recapturing the past and Immoral the moment of time so recaptured. The tree is both a tree and assemble and in it or implicated board time and eternity.

 The first stanza of the poem is an objective description of the tree. The second relate the tree to Taurus on impression of it at different times. The third stanza of the poem links up tree with Taurus memories of a lost brother and sister , Abju and Aru :

"But not because of magnificance

Dear is the Casuarina to my soul: 

beneath it was have played ;

through years may roll,

O sweet companion loved with intense

 for year sakes shall the tree  be ever dear!

The four stanza of the poem summarize the tree for its lament is a human recordation of pain and regret. The fifth and the last stanza Wills as it where the immortality of the tree.

The poem has all together five stanza consisting of 11 lines each and the rhythm scheme is Abba, cdde, eee. In the organisation of the poem as a whole and in the finish of the individual stanza, in its mastery of phrases and rhythm, in its music of sound an ideas, "our Casuarina tree is a super piece of writing.
