“The Bachelor of arts” is a famous Novel of R.K. Narayan a great novelist of Indian English literature. His  novel are free from propaganda, philosophy or didacticism. Indeed, he is a writer, pure and simple having no pretensions and ambitions. his plots and themes revolve round human joys and sorrows , romance and frustations of the people of Malgudi.                                                                                                               

         “The Bachelor of Arts” is the second in the triology that began with Swami and Friends. It is the story of Swami - now named Chandran attending college and finding a place in the world. The novel traces Chandran’s College Days, his unfortunate love story, his Sanyasi life and finding a way to earn a living. The theme of “The Bachelor of Art” is divided into four parts. The first parts deal with the college life of hero, in the second part Hero’s love for a 15 year old girl Malathi has been described; the third part deal with the disgusted state of the hero’s mind and his aimless wanderings; and in the fourth part Hero,s domestic life has been drawn.

         “The bachelor of Art” in the story of Chandra. In the first part, the academic pursuits and the extra-curricular activities of Chandra, a BA student has been given an artistic and interesting description.  He has a happy family including his parents and his younger brother Seenu. He has no worry about life and enjoying the life with his friend Ramu.

               But suddenly a twist comes in his life. He is a graduated now. He has so many dreams for the future and carrier but he does not know the twist that life is bringing for him. He is also preparing for going abroad but suddenly one day Malathi came in his life. Chandra is attracted towards her at the first sight and falls in love with her and from there everything is scattered in his life. Instead of thinking about his career, now he always think of Malathi. He is passionately in love with her and wants to marry her. But due to horoscope matching and some other reasons, he could not marry her and then  girl then Marries some other person. Chandran falls victim to frustration and despair and becomes a pessimistic. This is all what we find in the second part of the novel.

            In the third part the hero in order to forget Malathi and to get relief of his frustration, wants a change. He leaves fro Madras, where he meets Kailas who is a reckless youth habitual of heavy drinking and visiting prostitutes for his sexual pleasure. Chandran feels disgusted and becomes a Sanyasi and wanders aimlessly in various parts of South India but you does not get satisfaction. He faces so many troubles and bitter experiences of life and life itself makes him realize that “love is only an illusion”. His thoughts also expressed his realization about love. Now he thinks  about his parents and also feel a responsibility towards them.

                 
In 4th part of the novel we find him returning back to his home. After returning home he again starts to think about his career. He also agrees to marry a girl Susila, the beautiful daughter of an advocate and thus leads his conjugal and domestic life happily ever after.

                     The theme of the novel revolves around the activities and desire of the hero Chandran.  The novel gives a wonderful message that failure in love can lead the life towards depressions but try to explore the new ways for a new beginning of life. The novelist has effectively deal with the realistic issue and perfect embodiment of simplicity and values is found here. The whole theme of the novel has been delineated in a very logical and chronological order.
