Critical Appreciation of Lotus by Toru Dutt
The poem entitled “ Lotus” has been composed by Toru Dutt a great poet of the Indian English
Literature. Toru Dutt contribution in
literature is so great that her name is known beyond the limits of this country
. Unfortunately she died young and her early death was a great loss to
Indo-Anghan poetry.
Lotus is a beautiful poem containing a fancy of thoughts. The poem is
personified love and flora . The poet has comoared the flowers of rose and
lily. They have been treated as rivals.Rose is a symbol of beauty and love
where as liliy is a symbol for the title
“ Queen of Flower “. Each flower with
its own support from poets , clm notes1.blogspot.com/2021/12/theme-of-untouchable-by-mulk-raj-anand.html ed for the title. At this time God of love came to goddess Flora
asking for a flower which would be unchallenged queen of Flower. The lily and
rose always fought for this houner and many poets praised them and wrote poems
on them. Some flowers told rose was better than lily and other flowers compared lily to the
beautiful goddess face . Some flowers
supported lily where as others supported rose. Love said he wanted a
flower which has a sweet smell like that
of rose and which is very grand looking like that of a lily. Then Flora asked
what colour flower does he want. First
love said rose red and later said he wanted both the colours. So Flora created
a flower called lotus which had the colour of rose red from morning to noon and
which had lily white colour from afternoon
till dusk of innocence and simplicity. For a long time , lily
and rose had been fighting. At the
end of the poem the lotus has been declared as the queen of flower because it
has the redness of rose and whiteness of lily. Therefore the goddess of
vegetation ,Flora , declared lotus as
the flower of beauty and grandness.
Here the poet presents the idea that the Indian lotus is the most beautiful of all flower and Hindu
mythology is clearly visible in this simple poem. “Lotus” is a petrarchan sonnet . It is divided into two parts -
octave and sestet. The sonnet deals with a single idea , the octave
proposing and the sestet resolving . A problem is raised in octave and resolved
in sestet Toru Dutt,s mastery over the sonnet form is proved in this poem..
